How many times have you thought about learning a new language? Learning a language is one of the most complicated tasks that exist. My experience is based on the teaching of Spanish, but these tips that I recommend today can be extrapolated to the teaching of any language.
1. HAVE A REASON TO LEARN SPANISH
Having a good reason to learn a language is very important. Do not learn it because it is easy or to find a job because you will not succeed. Do it because you like music, because you want to travel, because culture attracts you ... That will motivate you and make your learning more effective.
2. VISIT A HISPANO-SPEAKING COUNTRY AND KNOW YOUR CULTURE
You can memorize, study ... but an experience can teach you much more than weeks of study. Facing real situations and interacting with natives will create the need to put into practice everything you know. Do at least once in your life a linguistic immersion.
Interact Learn through interculturality. Knowing the Hispanic culture and comparing it with yours will help you understand aspects such as behavior or humor that will facilitate the process of learning the language.
3. CHOOSE A PROFESSOR FORMED IN ELE (TEACHING SPANISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE)
It is very common to use native speakers to teach us a language: error. Not because a person speaks a language perfectly is able to teach it. For this ELE teachers receive a specific training in which they study how and what to do so that a person learns a second language in an effective way. And remember: ask and ask for help. The teachers adore the students who ask.
4. ESTABLISH PERSONAL RELATIONS WITH NATIVE PEOPLE
Go on, have fun, fall in love with a native. Creating a personal bond with a person who has mastered the language and its culture will make you discover, practice in different contexts and learn things that you will not learn in class. You will talk about feelings and you will feel the language.
5. USE ALL THE WORDS IN SPANISH THAT YOU KNOW
When you are studying a language you learn new words constantly. Whether you just know a word or you do not know it. If you have just learned a word, apply it and repeat it whenever you see it and whenever you can. They say that we internalize a word of truth when we use it 7 times. Many of my Spanish students write lists of new words in a small notebook. This custom is great but it is not enough. We must practice them in real life. And remember: if you do not know the word, describe. For example, if you do not know the word giraffe you can say animal, high, Africa.
6. PRACTICE IN YOUR MIND AND IMITATE THE SPANISH ACCENT
Imitate a Spanish? Yes. It seems strange, but yes. Listen to the natives and notice their intonation. To pronounce the sounds well in Spanish or in any language, the most important thing is to be aware of how these new sounds sound and the possible nuances of intonation. If you imitate the accent you will train your ears and improve significantly.
7. DEDUCT BY THE CONTEXT. ASK AS LAST RESORT.
Take a look at the context, look at people's reactions, their gestures and their facial expressions as they talk. Do it before asking. What will you get with this? You will make your mind struggle to comprehend globally what they are saying in the conversation. Try to decipher.
8. PUT FILMS, SERIES OR LISTEN SONGS IN SPANISH
Watch the movies in the original language first. When your ear gets used to it, try putting the subtitles in your language. Little by little we will change them by the original language of the film to remove them.
Use the music to communicate. Yes, as you hear it. Listen to the lyrics, read them, translate them and, if you dare, make a dictation. You will see how surprised you are by the amount of phrases of songs that you will use on a day-to-day basis.
9. READ BOOKS OR MAGAZINES IN SPANISH
Read books that are written for young people. You will expand vocabulary and know current expressions and phrases. Do not read classical literature to learn Spanish.
10. TRANSLATE AND RELATIVELY MENTALLY
They say that when you dream or get up thinking about your language, it is when you have internalized and assimilated the language. Translate Ask yourself how you would say in your language. Ask grammatical questions comparing your native language and Spanish. And above all remember: do not be ashamed. There is always someone who speaks Spanish worse than you. Always. In addition, the person in front of you is never looking for your mistakes, is evaluating that you use your language and not another to communicate.
